A Talking Head: An Excerpt from Talking Heads by Alan Bennett

     This was an assignment for my design 4 class. We had to make a three minute video. I asked my friend for a monologue - something of her choosing, so she did this for me. As she did it, I was thinking that she sounded like a drunk and when I voiced that she told me that the character was in fact, a drunk so I had to put that in there. I like it, it was a good choice of monologue.

     This is a fake movie trailer I did for my design 4 class. The assignment was to pick a Brothers Grimm fairy tale and make a trailer for a film we would make with the material. I did Snow White. I set my fake movie in modern times. It is a story about young girl (for in the original text she is seven when the queen tries to have her killed) whose affinity for apples has earned the nick-name 'Snow White.' Other than that, it's the basic story - older woman, her stepmother become jealous of her youth and beauty and hires some one to dispose of her. I guess my film would have been more about our obsession with youth and I could have went crazy with the mentally unstable stepmother and developed that character into something fun to watch.

     As for the title sequence, I like when title sequences are boring so that it forces the viewer to read the text. Also, yes, I cast real actors in my fake movie. Since you only see my mom's hands, I gave them to Elizabeth McGovern - I had been in an Elizabeth McGovern mood and I also gave Toni Collette a role. She would have played the neighbor that realizes what going on and attempts to stop it. 

     I also enjoyed doing this because I love kids - Evelyne was great to work with, not to mention adorable. Snow White is supposed to have lips red as blood and hair black as night - I made a reference to the blood with Rita pricking her finger and by using lip stain that some of my class said what unnoticeable and others said was too over the top. Personally, I like the stain - I think it worked. As for the hair, I had a blonde - you win some you loose some, it's an interpretation of the text ;). I can deal with it considering how comfortable she was in front of the camera. Although I fear I may have misspelled her name - I do not know if it is Evalyne or Evelyne - but I am most certain that misspelled the name of my LEAD in the credits...

     The movie posters were extra credit - upon my request :)

     This is what happens when you give me a sort of hard assignment, a video camera that I can't figure out, an uncooperative kid, and a bad day for editing.  The assignment was to take a video that is one minute long - one clip. I had this whole idea, but Ava was not having it so, I just got her while she was playing with the eggs.  I've always been attracted to eggs as a symbol, I love to photograph them, so the fact that she is destroying them is interesting subject matter in my opinion. If this had been better exposed and I had the energy to look for better (more appropriate - the song itself is beautiful) music, I think it wouldn't be too bad, but as it is right now, this is bad. I uploaded it to youtube, as I intend to do for all of my video work, because I want to track my progress. I want to improve and this is a great low point from which - I hope - it can't get any worse.

     These are the first pictures of Ava that I've taken in the winter, well, it's been the first winter since I started taking pictures of her. It's almost been a year since I took that first set. I felt bad with this set, she was horribly cold but that didn't seem to stop her much. That little girl knows how to get her picture taken. I want her to be in a Marc Jacobs ad one day. I told her that I wanted her to be creepy, so she was. We went to this park - not far from her house because we were losing light so quickly. The pond was frozen, it was freezing, there was no one around and it was so silent other than the numerous crows. 

     We took a couple of picture and after, what I'm estimating to have been, 30 minutes, she said, "I want to leave this scary place." It was adorable. But, it really was unsettling. I want to get the creepy feel of the atmosphere and the crows were really a big part of that, so a took a video clip of her with my phone.  I told her to look dead. I like the creak of the swing and the low-quality of it - it's kind of makes it creepier, like a serial killer documenting her work....I kind of want to do it with adults. Like, have a series of short video clips of 'dead' bodies in motion. It's a bit cliche, but I think it'd be fun.
