These are outtake from taped auditions I helped Carmela with. These are shots that I used to focus the camera. They were all taken right before she starts the dialogue, so she was standing there, getting into character, waiting as I focus the camera before I started recording, I snapped these. I didn't actually need to take the picture, I just needed to focus on her. But I wanted to get those off moments (which is a recurring theme in my work, I have come to notice) and so, I didn't tell her was I was doing. I guess, in hindsight, it doesn't really matter, it probably wouldn't have made a difference but at the time it seemed like a good idea - I don't know. I could have taken stills from the tapes but I didn't want to - I wanted the off moments and I really can't understand why, nor do I have the energy to look into at the moment.
Any way - the light in this apartment is amazing. There comes beautiful diffused light from a sky light that so evenly light the space - it's beautiful. She had a lamp that she liked to use for fill or as she said, "to warm it up." I didn't like it initially. I didn't think it was necessary but looking at these images, it creates this subtle shadow that mimics stage light and old Hollywood style light at the same time. In the pictures where the shadow is noticeable are beautiful. I know the light didn't matter for her purposes and looked much different in motion but it was wonderful - I kept telling the poor woman how wonderful it was. Sometimes I get too excited about light.
I especially love the last one, the outfit she wore for that character, the way the lamp hit her and made that shadow, her expression. It looks like film still to me. I remember exactly what she was doing. She was pointing out where she would look when speaking to 'Jane.' The image does not reflect that but that's the beauty of it, I guess.
Also, these are untouched by photoshop.

These are from my movie still project. This character was one that thought she lived in the past in a cliche type of way. The mini story is basically that she get's all dressed up, as if she was in the 1950's with nowhere to go. She smokes because they did back then. She wears the dress because they did back then. Everything she does is because that's what they did back then, yet, seeing as she was not born yet, she does not really know what they did back then. I love the shoes Carmela has, they are from the 1930's and I love that she wore them, it's like the girl doesn't know what shoes are from when and put together a completely inaccurate outfit. She is bored, dumb and a little bit insane.
I said that this girl is very Baby Jane in that she is dreaming, and believing, that she lives in time that it is impossible for her to live in.
